Why does the stock market exist?

Most people meet the stock market as a scoreboard — green numbers, red numbers, a ticker that never sleeps. But the market was not built to be a casino. It exists to solve a very old, very human problem: businesses need money to grow, and ordinary people need a way to grow their money. The stock market is simply the bridge between the two.

This is the first lesson of Module 1. Read it slowly — everything else in the course is built on this one idea.

The problem the market solves

Imagine a company that makes a great product but needs ₹100 crore to build a new factory. It has two choices:

• Borrow the money (a loan or bond) and pay it back with interest, or
• Sell a piece of itself — a share — to people who believe in its future.

When you buy that share, you become a part-owner of the business. If the business does well, your share of it becomes more valuable. That exchange — capital today for ownership in tomorrow — is the entire reason the market exists.

How money is really made

There are only two honest ways a share rewards you:

1. The business grows. Profits rise, the company is worth more, and the price of your share reflects that over time.
2. The business shares its profits with owners, as dividends.

Notice what is not on this list: tips, hunches, or someone’s “sure-shot” call. Prices move every second, but genuine wealth in the market is created slowly, by owning good businesses — not by guessing the next tick.

Where you fit in

When you invest, you are doing something powerful: putting your savings to work inside real companies that employ people and build things. Done with understanding, it is one of the few ways an ordinary person can participate in the growth of the whole economy.

Done without understanding, it is how most people lose money. The difference between the two is exactly what this course is about.
